Downtown Memphis Commission (DMC) and UrbanArt Commission (UAC) are commissioning a lighting and mural installation that will positively impact existing conditions of the I-40 underpass at North Main Street.

UAC Underpass

UAC and DMC are commissioning a lighting and mural installation that will positively impact existing conditions of the I-40 underpass at North Main Street. The selection committee expresses an interest in a public art piece that will:

  • Provide a welcoming atmosphere that encourages pedestrians to move from Downtown into the Pinch and vice versa
  • Embed elements within the installation that will be visible during the day as well as night
  • Create an experience that residents and tourists will want to revisit

The commissioned artist will be selected based on previous experience with the design of exterior public art projects.

Applicants are expected to have the technical capabilities to design and install such projects, including providing maintenance instructions. The finished project must require as minimal regular maintenance as possible. Final artwork should complement the characteristics and neighborhood identity of the site. The artists or artists teams selected are expected to collaborate closely with site engineers, landscape architects, and any necessary party for the successful installation of the project, including the community. NOTE: Commissioned artists are permitted to work with outside contractors to fabricate the actual work of art.

UAC and DMC rigorously pursue excellence in equity and inclusion. To this end, applications from ethnic minorities, indigenous peoples, and women are encouraged.

The UrbanArt Commission and Old Dominick Distillery are commissioning an artistic crosswalk on the southern side of South Front Street at the intersection of East Pontotoc Avenue.

UAC Dominic Crosswalk

Old Dominick Distillery is located in Downtown Memphis at 305 South Front Street, at the corner of South Front Street and East Pontotoc Avenue. The distillery is across the street from Gus’s Fried Chicken.

The dimensions of the crosswalks are approximately 10’ by 28’. The crosswalks on East Pontotoc Avenue and the northern side of South Front Street have already been striped according to City of Memphis standards. There is an opportunity to carry a smaller design element from the artistic crosswalk between the existing striping of the other three crosswalks.

Old Dominick Distillery expresses an interest in a public art project that will:

  • Consider Old Dominick Distillery’s brand guidelines (which can be found below)
  • Promote a more visible and pedestrian-friendly intersection
