Applications for Downtown Memphis Commission's Events, Animation and Activation Grant are rolling in, and the allocations committee has awarded grants to eight fantastic projects as of July 22. The Grant is intended to support events, art, creative placemaking, and social and professional engagement that celebrate the Memphis spirit and culture within Downtown for projects taking place from July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017.
Organizations and individuals with ideas that they would like to see come to life in Downtown Memphis are encouraged to apply. Allocations will be awarded on a first come, first served basis until funding is depleted. For more information or to view the grant application, click here.

Victorian Village is hosting a showcase of homes on the 600 block of Jefferson Avenue. Featured homes include: Laurelhill (671 Jeffereson Ave.), Shellcrest (669 Jefferson Ave), Shadowcrest (667 Jefferson Ave), Larry and Chuck's Home, Jocelyn and James Henderson Home, Flo's Place, and The Wright Carriage Home.

Halloran Centre for Performing Arts & Education
Indie Memphis will hold a one-day, youth-oriented film festival that will showcase dozens of short films and videos from both local and national young filmmakers (ages 12-17). The event will consist of engaging panels and workshops with professional filmmakers such as Memphis-based Hollywood director, Craig Brewer. A special screening of a shot-for-shot, no budget remake of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" will be shown with directors (at the time 12 and 17) Chris Strompolos and Eric Zala answering questions and discussing how creativity and drive can lead to an amazing journey.

Celebrate the first annual Oktoberfest on the River at Tom Lee Park! Not your average Oktoberfest, this grand event will include beer gardens, several stages of musicians, arts and crafts, children's pumpkin patch, around 30 carnival rides and attractions, and an abundance of amazing food and German & Craft Beer!

Downtown's Halloran Centre will serve as host for the "Gala" evenings for the premier film festival in Memphis. The opening night screening with reception will be held on Nov. 1st with the closing night screening held on Nov. 7th. Other dates for screenings downtown include Nov. 2nd and 3rd.
Both "Gala" evenings will include 2 film screenings per night, panels and off-site parties. Last year's parties were held at Earnestine & Hazel's and B.B. King's.

The Basketball Jones Series is being presented by four artists who will present live on-street theatre productions and mural installation to highlight the significance of the basketball culture in Memphis through art. The on-street performances will coincide with the Memphis Grizzlies Season (Pre, Regular, and Playoffs) and NBA All-Star Game and the backdrop used for the performances will be installed as a mural on a building located on Madison near Main Street.

April 6 - 7, 2017
Cannon Center & National Civil Rights Museum
As part of a new four-day festival showcasing the works of African-American and Latino artists, the "Strange Fruit Project" and will be held as the event opener at the Cannon Center on April 6, 2017. The performance is work by Hattiloo and the Memphis Symphony Orchestra that centers around 21 lynchings that took place in Memphis between 1877 and 1950. It will be comprised of original dramatic narratives honoring the lives and deaths of the victims set to musical pieces from the MSO repertory, selected for their ability to convey the intesne emotion. MSO willl also produce a symhphonic rendition of Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit."
On Friday, April 7th, festival partners will convene a press review and panel discussion at the National Civil Rights Museum at 10 am to introduce the public to the festival, its purpose and justice theme, participating artists, and visitors from the national theatre community.
